Body Piercing & Employers Policies

The subject of body piercing in the workplace is not only a common subject of discussion by people with piercings, but one which continues to evolve as social acceptance of body piercing and related employment laws attempt to come to terms with this widespread and growing trend in the workforce.

Body piercing is not a new phenomenon, it has been around and praticed by diverse cultures all over the world since even before recorded history. In spite of this fact, individuals with body piercings have been generally shunned and considered to be members of a lower social class in western cultures for most of modern history. With the relatively recent increase in the number of people getting tattoos and body piercings, our society’s views of the cultural norms in this arena have been turned on their heads.

Where body modifications such as tattoos and piercings were once considered to be the domain of such socially outcast groups as: pirates, gang members, hippies, gypsies, and prison inmates, the tables have begun to turn and people from all walks of life (and on more diverse rungs of the social ladder) have embraced this form of self expression. Although there is still a long ways to go before body modification becomes completely accepted in our western society, great strides in that direction have been taken and employers are beginning to take note.
